Our Infrastructure

Berkshire Connect recognized that bringing competitive broadband services to the region at drastically reduced prices required a partner who would build new telecommunications infrastructure into and within Berkshire County. Prior to the implementation of the Berkshire Connect solution, many companies sold competing telecommunication services, but all had to deliver the services over existing Verizon network. Without new infrastructure, Berkshire County could not benefit from true competition.

Berkshire Connect chose to partner with Global Crossing to provide network and services to its member companies. Global Crossing has committed the financial resources to design, build and manage new broadband infrastructure in Berkshire County.

Global Crossing's backbone transport system connects to the county's population centers of Pittsfield, North Adams and Great Barrington. Traffic aggregated from throughout the county over multiple OC3s in the network backbone to a Carrier Interconnection Center located at Springfield Technical Community College Technology Park in Springfield, MA.

From the Interconnection Center, the traffic is transported directly to Global Crossing's primary New England switch in Boston. Global Crossing's full suite of world-class voice, data and Internet services are provided to Berkshire Connect member companies via these facilities. Through these facilities, companies access Global's national and international networks, the most advanced IP-based network in the world today.

Global Crossing's investment has brought true competition to Berkshire County's telecommunications market. The infrastructure has substantially increased the availability and quality of broadband connectivity and services for area businesses and institutions while substantially reducing costs.
